2014.04.17                    Jesus in the Passover
Song        Sh'ma Ysrael
Welcome and opening prayer        Lighting of the candle
Good evening everyone, Thanks for coming....
Song   Yeshua HaMashiach
The first Passover ......a short review.... Exodus 12....
For more than 3500 years the Pesach.... the Passover has been celebrated.... That´s longer than any religious celebration in history.... It is a call.....
A call for the people of God to remember.... to remember that they had been slaves..... in bondage in Egypt for 430 years.... They were powerless to free themselves from Pharaoh...... they needed a savior.... a redeemer.....
Exodus 12: 1- 14           NKJV
1 Now the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying, 2 “This month shall be your beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year to you. 3 Speak to all the congregation of Israel, saying: ‘On the tenth of this month every man shall take for himself a lamb, according to the house of his father, a lamb for a household. 4 And if the household is too small for the lamb, let him and his neighbor next to his house take it according to the number of the persons; according to each man’s need you shall make your count for the lamb. 5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year. You may take it from the sheep or from the goats. 6 Now you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the same month. Then the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it at twilight. 7 And they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on the lintel of the houses where they eat it. 8 Then they shall eat the flesh on that night; roasted in fire, with unleavened bread and with bitter herbs they shall eat it. 9 Do not eat it raw, nor boiled at all with water, but roasted in fire—its head with its legs and its entrails. 10 You shall let none of it remain until morning, and what remains of it until morning you shall burn with fire. 11 And thus you shall eat it: with a belt on your waist, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand. So you shall eat it in haste. It is the LORD’s Passover.
12 ‘For I will pass through the land of Egypt on that night, and will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD. 13 Now the blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you; and the plague shall not be on you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.
14 ‘So this day shall be to you a memorial; and you shall keep it as a feast to the LORD throughout your generations. You shall keep it as a feast by an everlasting ordinance.
Exodus 12: 1- 14              Sch 2000
3 Redet zu der ganzen Gemeinde Israels und sprecht: Am zehnten Tag dieses Monats nehme sich jeder Hausvater ein Lamm, ein Lamm für jedes Haus2;
9 Ihr sollt nichts davon roh essen, auch nicht im Wasser gekocht, sondern am Feuer gebraten, sein Haupt samt seinen Schenkeln und den inneren Teilen;

Each year when they celebrated Passover they were to remind themselves of the bitterness of slavery..... and the greatness of their redemption......they.... we…. have received grace and mercy...... to remember that the LORD had done great miracles.....
that He .... the LORD GOD....led them to freedom.... and into the promised land.... to remember that they had been rescued from death because of their faith and obedience....because they trusted in the Lamb´s sacrifice.... and in the blood of the Lamb....
We have been looking at these things for the last few days as we have studied the first passover....

When we look at the Powerful description of.....
Jesus the Messiah...... as Isaiah described HIM in Isaiah chapters 50 thru 53..... the suffering servant passages....We see many  things  that help us to understand the last week of Jesus earthly ministry.... And they help us to understand the Last Supper......
The Passover was to be a very personal experience.....We can see this in the words that The LORD GOD used in the instructions that He gave to the children of Israel in Exodus 12....
He starts off saying.....in verse 3...choose A lamb ....
then in verse 4 it gets specific... the lamb.....
then in verse 5 He makes it very personal.....take your lamb.... each one of us must take Jesus to be our personal redeemer.
The Passover is also to be an experience that is  shared with others.... first in the family.... GOD commanded us to teach our children
Why remember and celebrate the Passover?..... we have been commanded to....

1.  commanded to remember....

2.  commanded to teach....         2 Tim 3......

3. commanded to celebrate the Passover….
celebrating the Passover is to produce a desire in our children .... to know more about the LORD and his dealings with us.....to help them understand the wonderful grace....... and the incredible mercy that He has poured out into our lives......
The excitement and preparations at the time of Jesus
aliyah... to go up...
pilgrim songs.... songs of assent.....
I want us to notice three things about  this Passover season........
1.  It was a  time of celebration and worship....
Come let us go up to the house of the LORD....
Ps 42, 84, 113-118 known as "The great Hallel"
Ps 122, 133, 134.... and others....
2. it was a time of anticipation.....
new sights and sounds and smells..... new people..... maybe a wife ... a daughter of Jerusalem..... a new Husband.... a Scolar or a young man descended from the priestly families...

3. It was a time of preparation.....
The tombs were  painted white.... to protect pilgrims from defilement.... If they got too close to a grave .... they would not be able to celebrate the Passover.....
Everything was carefully cleaned.... and baptized (immersed )in boiling water.... to purify them for the Seder meal..... Everything .... must be cleansed...
The night before the Passover.... the house must be cleansed of every trace of Leaven....
The father would take a candle..... and a wooden spoon or a feather.....look for any trace of leaven and remove it....this symbolism is seen in the scriptures....
Zephaniah 1: 12.... Where God said that he would search out the leaven of sin and destroy it....
The orthodox take a little bit of leaven which they always find and throw it into bonfires in the middle of the street..... to show everyone that they have cleansed their house of the leaven of sin....
Paul used this same picture to speak about the sinful leaven of pride...in 1 Cor 5....

1 Cor 5: 6- 8   NLT
6 Stop being proud! Don't you know how a little yeast can spread through the whole batch of dough? 7 Get rid of the old yeast! Then you will be like fresh bread made without yeast, and that is what you are. Our Passover lamb is Christ, who has already been sacrificed. 8 So don't celebrate the festival by being evil and sinful, which is like serving bread made with yeast. Be pure and truthful and celebrate by using bread made without yeast.
1 Cor 5: 6- 8   Neues Leben
Our Passover Lamb is Christ.... last Sunday.... the 10th of Nissan.... is the day that the Passover lambs were selected........they taken to be examined for the next four days....Just like Jesus presented himself in the Temple to be examined by the people and the priests...
Finally after weeks of preparations.... it was time.....turn with me please to Luke 22...
Luke 22:14- 16   NLT
14 When the time came, Jesus and the apostles sat down together at the table. 15 Jesus said, “I have been very eager to eat this Passover meal with you before my suffering begins. 16 For I tell you now that I won’t eat this meal again until its meaning is fulfilled in the Kingdom of God.”
Luke 22:14- 16   Neues Leben

The Final Passover
At the time of Jesus….here´s how it was celebrated....
Lighting of the Candle.... done by the hostess of the feast.....
Prayer to begin the Celebration ( Maggie)
At the time of Jesus.... the Passover celebration had a Seder.... That means …… an order or plan for the  service...... We can see it in the Gospels.... Luke 22
In Jesus day…… The Seder service already  had a set order of prayers of thanksgiving and ritual washings…… the first cup
Jesus prayed over the cup
Blessed are you O Lord Our God King of the Universe…..
Look at Luke 22: 17
LUKE 22: 17,18       NLT    Neues Leben
17 Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, “Take this and divide it among yourselves; 18 for I say to you,[b] I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”
4 cups of wine ……1 for each promise
First cup-       First promise
I will free you from oppression
Jesus poured the first cup and then prayed.....
Prayer over the wine
Jesus prayed like this..... Blessed are you "Oh LORD our God .... King of the Universe"....who has given us the fruit of the vine.... and commanded us to remember our deliverance from bondage...
There will be 4 cups of wine tonight in the service…..... each of the first  four cups....... point to the four promises that the LORD made in Exodus 6: 6- 8....
Exodus 6: 6- 8     NKJV
6 Therefore say to the children of Israel: ‘I am the LORD; I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, I will rescue you from their bondage, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments. 7 I will take you as My people, and I will be your God. Then you shall know that I am the LORD your God who brings you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. 8 And I will bring you into the land which I swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; and I will give it to you as a heritage: I am the LORD.’”
Exodus 6: 6-8    Sch 2000
Now at the first ceremonial washing.... Instead of washing only himself.... Jesus demonstrated  servant leadership..... he taught the disciples every day he was with them to love and serve.... he washed their feet...
Then the food was brought in....Jesus dipped bitter herbs in salt water.... and they all ate some....
Then the food was removed.... the ritual questions were asked....
WHY……  WHY……
and then the Story of the children of Israel was told..... beginning with Abraham all the way up to the Exodus and the first Passover.... the plagues were named one by one.... and a few drops of wine were dropped.... onto a plate after each plague was said...
By the way..... in your own times of personal Bible study..... look at Steven´s sermon in the book of Acts....Acts 6 and 7.....
Steven used this kind of telling....telling of the history of redemption.... to preach the Gospel....that day when he was stoned to death....
Tonight.... we will listen to the telling...... in the form of a song.... El Shaddai
SONG
EL SHADDAI
Then the food was brought back in..... and the symbolism of the food to be eaten was explained.....
first.....the  three required foods
1.The Lamb.....
perfect and spotless.... Just like Jesus
no broken bones....Just like Jesus
roasted with fire..... pure...refined...Just like Jesus

2.The herbs....
bitter
bitterness of bondage.....for us
the bitterness of sin and death

3.The unleavened bread...
prepared in haste....
no trace of defilement..... corruption..... souring...
preservation and purity from the defilement of sin….....
then at the time of Jesus two more had been added by tradition....
The salt water... It represented the bitter tears of slavery.....

The Haroseth....
a mixture of dates and apples and nuts and spices...
to resemble the mud and straw.... used to make the bricks for Pharaoh....
Second Cup       Second promise
I will rescue you from slavery....
for us .... we are not only forgiven....
we are set free from bondage to sin.... it no longer has control of our lives....Paul pointed to the same symbolism in Romans .... Romans 6:6......we are no longer slaves to sin.....
We drink the second cup.... second washing of the hands..... Then Jesus  broke the bread and  blessed it....
Prayer of thanksgiving for the bread
Blessed are you "OH LORD Our GOD " who has brought forth bread from the Earth....
Prayer of thanksgiving for the command to eat the unleavened bread….
Prayer over the bread    ( Maggie)
Blessed are you  "OH LORD Our GOD " who has commanded us to eat unleavened bread.... which also they did for eight days after the Passover....celebrating one great feast.....
The dipping of the sop.....
Recorded in John 13.....
Jesus put bitter herbs and the sweet mixture both on a piece of bread and served each disciple..... It reminds me again of JESUS` favorite phrase.... The son of man..... Jesus served the disciples….even though His is LORD and Master…… As an example to us that we are to serve each other…..
The main meal was eaten.....the Third cup was poured.....
Third Cup            third promise
I will redeem you...
This cup is called the cup of blessing.... or the cup of redemption....We believe that this is the very cup.... JESUS changed into a remembering of the great Passover Lamb.... the LAMB OF GOD..... Please notice the parallel.....
The Lord God instituted the Passover as a way of remembering his deliverance from Egypt...before he delivered them.....
Jesus instituted the Lords Supper as a way pf remembering and honoring him...... before he died on the cross.....
Communion
At this time……. I would like for all of us to take communion together
Turn with me to 1 Cor 11: 23-26....
1 Cor 11: 23-26                                 NLT
23 For I pass on to you what I received from the Lord himself. On the night when he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread 24 and gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and said, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this to remember me.” 25 In the same way, he took the cup of wine after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant between God and his people—an agreement confirmed with my blood. Do this to remember me as often as you drink it.” 26 For every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are announcing the Lord’s death until he comes again.
1 Cor 11: 23-26                          Neues Leben
Communion as a family of believers
Prayer over the wine (Maggie)
Blessed art thou Oh Lord our God who has given us the fruit of the vine….
Prayer for the Communion
Communion and Worship song
Worthy is the Lamb / Würdig ist das Lamm?
4th cup   fourth promise
I will take you to myself..... you will be my people…..
5th cup  the cup of Elijah
The children checked the door looking for Elijah.....because he was the forerunner of the messiah……John the Baptist was a picture of this….. Elijah himself is coming again in the future…… just before The Second coming OF Jesus at the end of time…..
Closing songs                         Closing prayer
Praise Adonai
So Gross ist der Herr/ How great is our God
