Sermon for Sunday January 25th

2015.01.25                            Acts 16:35-40  Acts 17:1 -15
                  Thankfulness at all times!
That´s the theme of our message today and I want to begin by telling all of you thank you so very much….
Tithing statements…. Marcel wil be handing out the tithing statements this morning…. We want to say Thank you to those of you who worship the Lord with your tithes and offerings…..! Even though we do not take offerings here at CCW…. Many of you give generously and regularly to continue the work of the Church…. We would not be here at all….. except for the generosity of those of you who joyfully give to the Lord……
Thankfulness at all times…. Paul lived it…… He wrote to the church at Thessalonica… In everything give thanks…. For this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you….1 Thessalonians 5:18….
The encouragement to give thanks and to worship our great God and Savior occurs many many times in the scriptures….. I counted almost 200 in just a few minutes this week….. Thankfulness even in the darkest prison cell……
We are witnessing the birth of the church as we study the book of Acts……. The church is exploding….. The Good News of the gospel is spreading everywhere….. Many who hear the Good News repent of their sins and find forgiveness and mercy and salvation…… But others……. Refuse to repent….. they harden their hearts….. They  reject the only way of salvation…… They are repulsed by the truth….. They become haters of Jesus and the Gospel….. And are in truth….. The enemies of God…
2 Corinthians 2: 14-16                NLT
14 But thank God! He has made us his captives and continues to lead us along in Christ’s triumphal procession. Now he uses us to spread the knowledge of Christ everywhere, like a sweet perfume. 15 Our lives are a Christ-like fragrance rising up to God. But this fragrance is perceived differently by those who are being saved and by those who are perishing. 16 To those who are perishing, we are a dreadful smell of death and doom. But to those who are being saved, we are a life-giving perfume. And who is adequate for such a task as this?

2 Corinthians 2: 14-16                NLT Neues Leben
Everywhere Paul went…. He proclaimed the Good News….. The Lord delivered him from death at the hands of those who hated God and His Word….. And now as we pick up the text….. Paul and Silas will be released….. Acts 16…v….35…
Acts 16:35-40               NKJV slt 2000
35 And when it was day, the magistrates sent the officers, saying, “Let those men go.”
36 So the keeper of the prison reported these words to Paul, saying, “The magistrates have sent to let you go. Now therefore depart, and go in peace.”
37 But Paul said to them, “They have beaten us openly, uncondemned Romans, and have thrown us into prison. And now do they put us out secretly? No indeed! Let them come themselves and get us out.”
38 And the officers told these words to the magistrates, and they were afraid when they heard that they were Romans. 39 Then they came and pleaded with them and brought them out, and asked them to depart from the city. 40 So they went out of the prison and entered the house of Lydia; and when they had seen the brethren, they encouraged them and departed.

Acts 16:35-40               slt 2000
v 35,36…. Paul and Silas returned to the prison willingly to spare the jailer certain death……. They had returned to the prison after the jailer and his family were ministered to…. and then they were set free by the magistrates the next day…… Notice here that Paul and Silas were released the day after their arrest, and beating…… So why did God send the earthquake?
The earthquake had absolutely nothing to do with freeing Paul and Silas from prison……. This earthquake was about the salvation of this prison guard and his household……
v40… Paul and Silas would not be hurried out of town until they had finished everything the Lord had sent them to do……. Proclaim the Gospel and make disciples…
In Philippi, Paul and Silas left behind Lydia and the prison guard…… Each of these two had their lives touched by Jesus in very different ways…...
Lydia was a devout seeker of the one true God….  the guard was a Roman pagan……. Lydia was safe and content with her life….. After the earthquake…. the guard was about to kill himself….. Lydia's heart was gently opened….. the guard's heart was violently confronted….. The guard had a remarkable sign…. an earthquake set his prisoners free….. but all Lydia had was the move of the Holy Spirit in her heart……. Both heard the Good News of the gospel and believed…… Acts 17….v1…

Acts 17: 1- 4                          NKJV
1 Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews. 2 Then Paul, as his custom was, went in to them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures, 3 explaining and demonstrating that the Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead, and saying, “This Jesus whom I preach to you is the Christ.” 4 And some of them were persuaded; and a great multitude of the devout Greeks, and not a few of the leading women, joined Paul and Silas.
Acts 17: 1- 4                          slt 2000
v1-3… Paul first went to the synagogue…… and preached Jesus crucified and risen again to the Jews (explaining and demonstrating that the Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead)……. He also explained that Jesus was the Christ…. The Messiah….
v4… some of them were persuaded….. In other words… Some Jews believed the Gospel…… and we see there were many others too…. most of the new believers were devout Greeks….. and  many prominent Jewish women (not a few of the leading women).
By all accounts, the work was a great success….. Ins gesamt…… a great multitude believed…… We can be sure that this work was bathed in prayer…… They had been sent out again to preach the Gospel and to make disciples… It is clear that God was leading Paul to open…… prepared hearts in his evangelistic work…..
The believers in Philippi immediately began to give to the work of the ministry….. They sent Paul on his way to Thessalonica…. Phil 4: 15,16….
While Paul was in Thessalonica….. he received financial support from the Christians in Philippi….. By their giving….. They helped with this successful work among the Thessalonians…… They invested into the Kingdom with their money…. That´s awesome….. But there is trouble ahead for Paul…..
Hard times are part of the real world Christian life…… The question is whether we will hang on to Jesus in those hard times…. Will we trust Him and His promises……? Will we be able to be thankful in all things…..? Oh how we need Jesus….
Paul wrote to remind Timothy about all that they had experienced….. let´s take a look….. 2 Timothy 3:10….
2 Timothy 3:10- 12                    NKJV
10 But you have carefully followed my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love, perseverance, 11 persecutions, afflictions, which happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra—what persecutions I endured. And out of them all the Lord delivered me. 12 Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.
2 Timothy 3:10- 12                      slt 2000
v12…yes and all who want to live a godly life in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution… let´s read on ….acts 17…v….5….
Acts 17:5-9                             NKJV
5 But the Jews who were not persuaded, becoming envious, took some of the evil men from the marketplace, and gathering a mob, set all the city in an uproar and attacked the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people. 6 But when they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some brethren to the rulers of the city, crying out, “These who have turned the world upside down have come here too. 7 Jason has harbored them, and these are all acting contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying there is another king—Jesus.” 8 And they troubled the crowd and the rulers of the city when they heard these things. 9 So when they had taken security from Jason and the rest, they let them go.

Acts 17:5-9                               slt 2000
6 Als sie sie aber nicht fanden, schleppten sie den Jason und etliche Brüder vor die Obersten der Stadt und schrieen: Diese Leute, die die ganze Welt in Aufruhr versetzen, sind jetzt auch hier;

v5… here we go again….. The enemies of the truth of the Gospel attack Paul…. Paul is opposed by a mob incited by envious people among the Jews……This is just like what happened in Antioch of Pisidia ….. (Acts 13:45, 50)…. And in  Iconium (Acts 14:2, 5), and Lystra Where Timothy was from (Acts 14:19)….. And now Thessalonica too....
v6… Jason was a Christian in Thessalonica whose house seems to have been a center for the church….. When these evil men from the marketplace did not find Paul and Silas…… They attacked Jason himself….. and some brethren who were with him…... Hanging out with Paul was dangerous……
Identifying with Jesus is dangerous…. More people have been persecuted and killed for the sake of the Gospel in the last 100 years than in the almost 2000 years since Christ….. In Africa and in the Middle East several hundred….. Many even a few thousand Christians have been killed in the last few years….
v6b…. "These who have turned the world upside down have come here too."

When they accused these Christians before the rulers of the city….. these evil men paid an unintended compliment to  Paul and Silas……. They said that these Christians…. Were the ones who have turned the world upside-down..... Of course it was not any person... it was the Lord Jesus.... it was the Glorious light of the Gospel that showed them their sin.... The Light of the Gospel forces people to decide.... repent and believe the Gospel or refuse to repent and harden their hearts..... The earth shattering power of the Gospel has come here too....
The Gospel has come here too…..
These men who proclaimed the Gospel no matter what the cost…… They laid down their lives…. These great Men and women who have gone before us…have radically impacted our world and nothing seems the same….. How wonderful it would be if people would say such things about us someday…
Jesus came not  only to transform our lives…..  but to turn our world upside-down…..  It is amazing to think that the Lord would use us for this very important work.....  As Paul said….  God has chosen the foolish and weak things of the world to confound the wise…..1 Corinthians 1:27…..   These wicked men from the marketplace made an even more serious accusation….. "these are all acting contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying there is another king; Jesus……This news made the crowd and the rulers of the city afraid….   because this raised the fear that their city might be seen as looking to rebel against Rome……
Their fears were false….  Even though the gospel has real political implications…… it makes Christians better citizens than before….. and our prayers for the government are more helpful than most imagine…...
I would like for us to notice something….. Even these wicked men….. Understood that Christians taught that Jesus was a king….. that He had the right to rule over His people……. Why is it that all too many Christians miss this message today? Most believers don´t think ofJesus as their absolute sovereign and Lord….. They just want to be fans of Jesus....  and use Him to protect them from harm….. And of course they are happy to us Him to get what they want for their lives….…. We are willing to fit him into our lives if He helps with our plans and goals….
v9… When they had taken security from Jason and the rest, they let them go…. Jason and the others were released once they left a security deposit..... that was to guarantee against any future riots....... look at v10….
Acts 17: 10-12                     NKJV
10 Then the brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea. When they arrived, they went into the synagogue of the Jews. 11 These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so. 12 Therefore many of them believed, and also not a few of the Greeks, prominent women as well as men.

Acts 17: 10-12                      slt 2000
V10... Then the brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea..... Paul and Silas did not want to bring more persecution on the Christians there..... .
They had left suddenly after spending only a few weeks in Thessalonica..... Paul felt he had so much more to say to these Christians..... so he wrote the letter of 1 Thessalonians...... Many feel 1 Thessalonians was Paul's "first" letter......
When they arrived in Berea they went into the synagogue of the Jews...... The Jews in Berea were willing to understand Paul and so they studied diligently...... In Berea, they  found that their audience was more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica.......  Two things earned this compliment for the Bereans: first, they received the word with all readiness....... Second, they searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so...... Wisdom here....
Christianity is in a crisis today...... We do not read and study our Bibles......  and so we can not discern truth from error.... We believe all kinds of totally unbiblical ideas..... If only we would open our Bibles....
Amos 8:11                             KJV  slt 2000
11 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD:
11 Siehe, es kommen Tage, spricht Gott, der Herr, da werde ich einen Hunger ins Land senden; nicht einen Hunger nach Brot, noch einen Durst nach Wasser, sondern danach, das Wort des Herrn zu hören.
The Bereans were taught by the most famous apostle and theologian of the early church........ and the human author of at least 13 New Testament books....... Yet, they searched the Scriptures when Paul taught....... to see if his teaching was truly Biblical!
They would not accept Paul's word at face value...... but wanted to know if these things were so....... When they heard Paul teach....... They didn´t say…. "My, he's a fine speaker.......
Instead, the Bereans wanted to know...... "Are these things  so…? Is this man teaching us the truth? Let's search the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things are so."
Their research was not casual......They searched the Scriptures...... It was worth it to them to work hard at it.... and investigate what the Word of God said.....  and how Paul's teaching matched up with it....... They   searched the Scriptures daily to find out.....   They made it a point of diligent study…..  They believed they could understand and find out truth from the Bible…... For them, the Bible was not just a pretty book of poetry  or nice spiritual inspiration for thoughts-for-the-day…… It was a book of truth, and that truth was there to find out…….
They received the word with all readiness…... When Paul preached…… they had open hearts….. but clear heads…. Many people have clear heads, but closed hearts…… They refuse to accept the Bibles for what it is…. The Word of God….

We should receive the word with open hearts…... But we must also have clear heads….. and when we hear a preacher…… We also need to search the Scriptures to find out whether the things being taught are truly Biblical….. If the great apostle Paul was worthy of this kind of close examination….. how much more should teachers and preachers today be carefully compared with the Scriptures!
Paul had nothing to fear by the diligent searching of the Scriptures by the Bereans….. If they were really seeking God and His Word….. they would find out that what Paul was preaching was true…… This is exactly what happened among the Bereans….. and therefore many of them believed…… It is the Word of God that the Holy Spirit uses to transform hearts and lives….. Not programs or hype..… Sadly the Jews from Thessalonica were not satisfied to force Paul out of their own city…… They hated the Gospel….. They were determined to Shut these Christians up……. Today we are witnesses a powerful increase in hatred for the Gospel and irrational hatred for God´s people…..  They even followed Paul to Berea to disrupt his work there....... Let's look at the next verses... Acts… Ch 17... V .....13....
Acts 17: 13-15                         NKJV
13 But when the Jews from Thessalonica learned that the word of God was preached by Paul at Berea, they came there also and stirred up the crowds. 14 Then immediately the brethren sent Paul away, to go to the sea; but both Silas and Timothy remained there. 15 So those who conducted Paul brought him to Athens; and receiving a command for Silas and Timothy to come to him with all speed, they departed.
Acts 17: 13-15                           slt 2000
Again these troublemakers stirred up the crowds against Paul….. This is now the fifth city Paul has been run out of by an angry mob…… stirred up by jealous and hateful Jewish leaders……

v14… Then immediately the brethren sent Paul away…. The Christians in Berea sent Paul away to Athens….. fearing for his life and a total disruption of the work going on there…… But both Silas and Timothy remained there….. because Paul wanted to leave them behind to take care of new Christians in Berea……
Why didn't they all go? Because Paul had a passion for planting churches and making disciples….. not just making converts….. Paul could not stay in the city and strengthen the Christians there…… he was too hot….. Everyone was after him….. But he wanted Silas and Timothy to stay and disciple the young believers….

Paul´s trials continue…… And Paul continues to keep his eyes on Jesus…. Paul went on his way….. For the sake of the believers in Berea….. I´m certain that he was praising the Lord for all that the Lord had done in transforming lives in Philippi and Thessalonica too….. turn with me to Phil…ch1….v3….

Philippians 1: 3- 7                  NKJV  slt 2000
3 I thank my God upon every remembrance of you, 4 always in every prayer of mine making request for you all with joy, 5 for your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now, 6 being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ; 7 just as it is right for me to think this of you all, because I have you in my heart, inasmuch as both in my chains and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel, you all are partakers with me of grace.

Philippians 1: 3- 7                  NKJV  slt 2000

I would like to remind us of our text from 2 weeks ago…. Look back to ch16…v.25…

Acts 16: 25                             NKJV  slt 2000

25 But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them.

Despite everything that happened to them….. Paul and Silas and timothy…. Even after having been beaten and thrown into prison….. Worshipped and praised the Lord….. They were grateful and thankful for their salvation……. Their horrible circumstances did not destroy their faith and trust in God and His promises…… They did not let the hard times over throw their faith…. They were truly thankful…. Even though they did not understand what was happening to them….

All true happiness is based on the knowledge and application of the Word of God..... to our lives…… It has nothing to do with our circumstances…….. circumstances change……… The Lord our God does not change…… he is always faithful…….

We need to make a greater effort than we ever have before........ to be consistent in our learning of the Word of God....... in our reading of the Word of God...... and in our application of the Word of God to our own lives....... It will help us thru the worst of times….as we remember all that the LORD has already done for us……
We´ve been forgiven….. We ´ve been transferred into His kingdom….

And if we desire true happiness and true contentment in this life..... we must learn to be thankful in all things..... trusting God to take care of us..... to help us........ and to bring all things together for our good and His Glory......

Warning! Danger!

1 Cor 11: 27-34                 NKJV

27 Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. 28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. 30 For this reason many are weak and sick among you, and many sleep. 31 For if we would judge ourselves, we would not be judged. 32 But when we are judged, we are chastened by the Lord, that we may not be condemned with the world.

33 Therefore, my brethren, when you come together to eat, wait for one another. 34 But if anyone is hungry, let him eat at home, lest you come together for judgment. And the rest I will set in order when I come.

1 Cor 11:27-34          sch 2000

28 Der Mensch prüfe aber sich selbst, und so soll er von dem Brot essen und aus dem Kelch trinken;
31 Denn wenn wir uns selbst richteten, würden wir nicht gerichtet werden;

1 Cor 11:23- 26    NLT

23 For I pass on to you what I received from the Lord himself. On the night when he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread 24 and gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and said, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this to remember me.” 25 In the same way, he took the cup of wine after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant between God and his people—an agreement confirmed with my blood. Do this to remember me as often as you drink it.” 26 For every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are announcing the Lord’s death until he comes again.

1 Cor 11:23- 26    Neues Leben
