Today´s sermon

2013.30.17                            The Messiah enters the Temple
                            Luke 19: 45 to Luke 20: 19
Luke 19: 45-48                   NKJV
45 Then He went into the temple and began to drive out those who bought and sold in it, 46 saying to them, “It is written, ‘My house is a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a ‘den of thieves.’”
47 And He was teaching daily in the temple. But the chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people sought to destroy Him, 48 and were unable to do anything; for all the people were very attentive to hear Him.
Luke 19: 45-48                Schlachter 2000
47 Und er lehrte täglich im Tempel; die obersten Priester aber und die Schriftgelehrten und die Vornehmsten des Volkes trachteten danach, ihn umzubringen;

Luke 20: 1- 19                 NKJV
1 Now it happened on one of those days, as He taught the people in the temple and preached the gospel, that the chief priests and the scribes, together with the elders, confronted Him 2 and spoke to Him, saying, “Tell us, by what authority are You doing these things? Or who is he who gave You this authority?”3 But He answered and said to them, “I also will ask you one thing, and answer Me: 4 The baptism of John—was it from heaven or from men?”

5 And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say, ‘Why then[a] did you not believe him?’ 6 But if we say, ‘From men,’ all the people will stone us, for they are persuaded that John was a prophet.” 7 So they answered that they did not know where it was from.
8 And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”
9 Then He began to tell the people this parable: “A certain man planted a vineyard, leased it to vinedressers, and went into a far country for a long time. 10 Now at vintage-time he sent a servant to the vinedressers, that they might give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the vinedressers beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 11 Again he sent another servant; and they beat him also, treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed. 12 And again he sent a third; and they wounded him also and cast him out.
13 “Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my beloved son. Probably they will respect him when they see him.’ 14 But when the vinedressers saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.’ 15 So they cast him out of the vineyard and killed him. Therefore what will the owner of the vineyard do to them? 16 He will come and destroy those vinedressers and give the vineyard to others.” And when they heard it they said, “Certainly not!”
17 Then He looked at them and said, “What then is this that is written: ‘The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone’?
18 Whoever falls on that stone will be broken; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder.”19 And the chief priests and the scribes that very hour sought to lay hands on Him, but they feared the people —for they knew He had spoken this parable against them.
Luke 20 : 1-19                      Schlachter 2000
So sagt mir:
Jesus has entered Jerusalem as the King and Messiah……. He has entered the Temple and cleaned house…… He has purged the Temple of the greedy servants of the High priest…….. He devastated the temple merchants by throwing them out…… Symbolically cleansing His Father's house…… Now it has become a classroom for Him……. The first verse of chapter 20 tells us that He is in the temple preaching the gospel……. and teaching the people…….. and being confronted by the religious leaders…….. the chief priests and the scribes and the elders……..
By this time the leaders of Israel hate Him…… now they are furious at Him…. because He has cleansed out their businesses…… He is acting without any authority that they know of…….  Hey Jesus….. What do you think you´re doing…… who told you to do this?
They have always wanted Him dead….. They want Him dead now more than ever……. and they will have Him dead at the hands of the Romans by Friday…….

Jesus tells a very simple story about a man who owned a vineyard and rented it out…….. And he sent his slaves to collect what's due……. They mistreated the slaves…. Finally  in an act of patience sent his own son……. Thinking they would at least respect his son…... But they killed the son in an effort to gain complete control of the vineyard…….. Everybody listening to the story would have agreed with the conclusion….. kill them and hire some new farmers……. Simple story…...
Look at verse 16…..
what will the owner of the vineyard do to them?
Luke 20: 16                   NKJV
16 He will come and destroy those vinedressers and give the vineyard to others.” And when they heard it they said, “Certainly not!”
Luke 20 : 16                     Schlachter 2000

“When they heard it they said, ‘May it never be!'” When they heard it, akouo, meaning when they understood it…….. When they finally got it…… they said, “No, no, no, no.”
Let´s look at the parable….
God is the Landowner…. The vineyard is Israel……. The vine-growers are the religious leaders….. the priests, scribes , Pharisees…etc…. and all of the other religious leaders…… They are responsible to shepherd Israel…… or in this parable…… to tend God's vineyard…… The long journey is all of  Old Testament history...... all the way from the beginning of Israel…. to the coming of Jesus…. that long time when the people of God were under the care of men appointed by the LORD….. The slaves in the story that are sent to the vine keepers are the Old Testament prophets…… They  were sent by God from time to time through Israel's history to receive the fruit that was due to God…... And they came to repeat the Word of God…… and to call for obedience to Him……. and to call for the people to bear fruit unto God……..
As we study  the Old Testament we see that they rejected the prophets……  they hated the prophets…… they stoned the prophets…… They often killed them….. Finally God says, “I'll send My beloved Son.” Who is none other than the LORD Jesus Christ and they kill Him…….
Jesus is telling Israel its own history…... You have been under the care of certain leaders who were placed by God in responsibility over you…. To care for you so that you would  produce spiritual fruit……..  Righteousness and Godly living….. They failed miserably……… They were so full of sin and rebellion that they were unwilling and unable to help the people follow the Lord….. And when God sent His prophets to call for some spiritual fruit….. Repentance and obedience and loyalty to a merciful redeemer…..  you mistreated and even killed the prophets…... Because you wanted the inheritance for yourselves….

And now God has sent His Son……. and what will these same spiritual leaders do?
The priests, the chief priests, scribes, the Pharisees, the Sadducees, the elders of Israel, they will kill the Son........ In only two days……. they'll have the Romans nail Him to a cross….. They will scream  for His crucifixion…… And why? Because they want the inheritance……. They want to keep control over the people…… They want to run God's Kingdom, Israel…..
And what will God do to them? Two things…… right here in verse 16……
1 “He will come and destroy those vine-growers.”
Jesus looks forward 40 years  to 70 A.D. when Titus Vespasian…… the Roman general came with his great Roman army to stop a rebellion that began four years earlier……. Titus will destroy Jerusalem and its temple….. Divine judgment…….
2 He will  “Give the vineyard to others.”
That is, take away the stewardship of Israel's religious leaders over God's people……. God will  give that stewardship to others……
And the idea of the story is that God removed from the leadership of Israel the stewardship of His people….. They had been stewards of God's truth…... They were keepers of the Law….. They were to shepherd and care for His people…. In Romans chapter 9….. Paul lists some of the privileges that Israel had been given…… the adoption as sons….. the glory…. the covenants….. the giving of the Law….. the temple service…. the promises…. the fathers…. And of course the long promised Messiah….. the LORD JESUS Christ……. They had been given everything…… And the leaders of Israel, the priests and the scribes…… The Pharisees and the Sadducees and the elders and leaders of the people were the keepers of truth…….
But now our Lord says, “Not only will this generation be destroyed, but the custodianship of Israel will pass from the hands of these apostate, untrue, unfaithful, Messiah-rejecting leaders to others…….
What does this mean? Others will become the custodians of the truth of God……. Others will become custodians of the people of God……. Who are the others? Matthew tells us…….

Matthew 21:43               NKJV Schlachter 2000
43“The Kingdom of God shall be taken from you and given to a people bringing forth the fruit of it.”

God will appoint new leaders….. The new leadership will be faithful stewards…… and the new people will be faithful followers…..
Who are these others?
The new leaders of God´s people are none other than the followers of Jesus Christ…...
They are to become the new custodians of God's Kingdom, of God's work of redemption among men…...
Now this shouldn't surprise anybody because this transition has already been happening…….
Turn to Luke chapter 9.......
Jesus  called the Twelve together....... Remember…… this is relatively early in His ministry….. He  gave them power and authority over all the demons and to heal diseases……  sent them out to proclaim the Kingdom of God and to perform healing……
Luke 9: 6        NKJV    Schlachter 2000
6, “They began going about among the villages preaching the gospel and healing everywhere.”
The had been given power and truth that the leaders of Israel did not have……. The leaders of Israel were not authentic…… they were hypocrites……In their hypocrisy…..  they were not speaking for  God…… they had no power….. and they did not proclaim the truth…... Here early in His ministry, our Lord commissions the Twelve, gives them power and authority over demons and disease and sends them to proclaim the gospel of the Kingdom…… that is the way of salvation and entrance into God's Kingdom……. The transition has already begun…… They are to be the new caretakers, the new custodians, the new stewards, the new vine-growers in God's vineyard…….
Chapter 10 of Luke shows this change too…… Luke 10Verse 1
Luke 10: 1-3                  NKJV
1 After these things the Lord appointed seventy others also, and sent them two by two before His face into every city and place where He Himself was about to go. 2 Then He said to them, “The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few; therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest. 3 Go your way; behold, I send you out as lambs among wolves.
Luke 10: 1-3                  Schlachter 2000
Jesus saw  the religious leaders of Israel as the wolves dressed in sheep's clothing…….
He now sends 70 out who are to go with the true Gospel….. repentance and genuine faith towards God…. All of that from a redeemed and changed heart….
The transition has already begun…… Ordinary men….. some fishermen and notice that we don´t even know the names of most of these….. They are the new stewards of the Kingdom……. Jesus says you go out and proclaim the Kingdom!..... They began to proclaim the truth of God……. Look down to verse 17…..  Chapter 10 verse 17…..
Luke 10: 17- 20           NKJV
17 Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.”
18 And He said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you. 20 Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.”
Luke 10: 17- 20                      Schlachter 2000
the seventy returned after going out into all these places…… with great Joy!
There is no greater joy than this ….. to obey the command of the Lord Jesus and go out and proclaim the Good news…… The disciples are thrilled and excited….. Jesus reminds them of something very important here in verse 20….. Don´t rejoice because of your power and influence….. rejoice because of the fact that your names are written in the Lambs book of Life….. That is the ultimate source of our joy! Wonderful….
Redemption, mercy….. forgiveness that we did not and never could deserve……
Go down to verse 21……..

John 10: 21-24                      NKJV
21 In that hour Jesus rejoiced in the Spirit and said, “I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and revealed them to babes. Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in Your sight. 22 All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.”
23 Then He turned to His disciples and said privately, “Blessed are the eyes which see the things you see; 24 for I tell you that many prophets and kings have desired to see what you see, and have not seen it, and to hear what you hear, and have not heard it.”
John 10: 21-24                      Schlachter 2000
Verse 21……. Look at this Jesus rejoiced in the Spirit…… How cool is that…… Jesus rejoiced in the Spirit over His disciples…… Why?….. 1 because they went out and obeyed Him……. 2They proclaimed the Good News…..  and 3 because they were thrilled to see what God was doing through them…… it filled them with joy…. The joyful thankful Christian life that we all seek? Where is it?.... It´s right here….
1 go  and obey Jesus…….
2 Proclaim the Good News…..  and
3 You will  see what God is doing through you…… You are now the stewards of the kingdom of Heaven….. What a treasure!
Look down at verse 23….. Jesus says…….. you are Blessed!

John 10: 23,24               NKJV   Schlachter 2000
23“Turning to the disciples, He said privately, ‘Blessed are the eyes which see the things you see 24  for I say to you that many prophets and kings wish to see the things which you see and didn't see them, to hear the things which you hear and didn't hear them.'”

Jesus told His disciples….. You are receiving privileges that people have longed for…….
Here today in the 21st century Ps 118….. You and me…. We are seeing things and doing things that show that we are the new ministers of the truth…… Proclaimers of the Good News….. New Testament grace and truth flowing out of our lives…… At least it should be flowing out of our lives….. Jesus says..…... You see things others don't see….. You hear and understand what others don't hear and understand…… What are you going to do about it? remember Jesus said……. Why do you call me LORD and not do what I tell you to do?

Ephesians 2:20 says the church is built upon the foundation of the Apostles and the prophets…… Christ Jesus being the chief cornerstone……. This is the new leadership in the church……. the Apostles and the preachers who preach the Word of God…. As Peter said in his letter….. 1 Peter 2…..
1 Peter 2: 9      NKJV
9 You  are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light
We are now His royal representatives…. A chosen generation
In the Great Commission Jesus sent us out…..
You go, you're My representatives…... You're the new vine-growers in My vineyard…..
Our stewardship is pretty simple…… Preach the Word.......... and of course……. Live the word….. Live the truth…… don´t be like these hypocritical leaders of Israel…. Make disciples of every nation….

Back to the parable…. The last word in the parable was that they killed the son….. But That´s not the end of the story…..  Go back to Luke 20…… They panic when they understand the meaning of the story,
The parable has ended…… The end is tragic for the vine-growers…… It's tragic, at this point, for the son, he's dead……. But the death of the son can't be the end of the story…… So he looks at them and says, “In case you're wondering if that's the end of the story, have you forgotten the Scripture?” And He quotes Psalm 118….
Luke 20: 17, 18               NKJV   Schlachter 2000
17 Then He looked at them and said, “What then is this that is written: ‘The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone’? 18 Whoever falls on that stone will be broken; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder.”

He takes them from the parable…. right into the Old Testament….. This is not the end of the story….. Have you forgotten the Scripture…….. Scripture says that the stone rejected becomes the chief cornerstone……!
Why is this passage important…?
They would understand it clearly….. They knew the hallel very well…… They knew Psalm 118, probably most of them knew it by heart…. certainly the leaders did....... the chief cornerstone is a picture of the Messiah…... The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone……
Now as Jesus is teaching he says that the son in the parable……  is the stone that they are rejecting…… and that He is also the Chief cornerstone….. the illustration has shifted and the son has become a stone…... They had said, “You're not perfect….. We don't accept You as the cornerstone to God's Kingdom.”
If you go back into the hallel in Psalm 118…. It is about the Lord Jesus……  the Messiah…. He is the stone which the builders rejected…… Peter talked about the Stone that they rejected when he preached to the leaders in Acts…. Turn to Acts 4…. Verse 10….
Acts 4: 10, 11                        NKJV
10 let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole. 11 This is the ‘stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone.’ 12 Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
Acts 4: 10, 11                     Schlachter 2000
He's talking to the rulers, the elders, and the scribes and to Annas and Caiaphas and all the leaders, and he says, “You rejected Him, you rejected Him as the cornerstone and He rejects you.” And guess what? The stone which you rejected is back and it's the cornerstone……. The Son is the stone and He has returned....... The story does not end with a dead Son….. He will die on Friday but He will rise on Sunday…… The stone did not measure up to their standards….. They rejected the Lord of Glory…… They killed Him…. But Jesus is the chief corner stone……  accepted and approved of by God..... Jesus rose from the dead…..
This is a message of love and grace to these rebellious leaders….. It is also a solemn and warning…… The consequences of refusing to repent….. of killing the son is disasterous…… that's why He wept back in Luke chapter 19 verse 41 when He came to Jerusalem…….. Rejecting Jesus Christ is the absolute worst thing anyone can ever do…… The message goes right to the heart of the matter…… It is the most important choice you will ever make in your life….. How did the leaders respond? Look at Luke 20 verse 19….
Luke 20:19                   NKJV    Schlachter 2000
19 And the chief priests and the scribes that very hour sought to lay hands on Him, but they feared the people —for they knew He had spoken this parable against them.
They knew JESUS was talking about them…… He was condemning them……. Instead of being convicted and repenting……  They continued their efforts to kill Him…… What will you do with Jesus Christ? Will you submit to Him, embrace Him as Lord and Savior? Will call Him LORD and do the things that He said? Will we ….. who say we belong to the Lord Jesus finally begin to really love and serve Him?
 Close
Peter wrote about our position in the Lord Jesus Christ….. He gives us some very practical and helpful advice….. He also connected our Christian lives to the rejected cornerstone……. Alive forever…..
1 Peter 2:1 – 12    NKJV
1 Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, 2 as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, 3 if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
4 Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious, 5 you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 Therefore it is also contained in the Scripture,“Behold, I lay in Zion A chief cornerstone, elect, precious, And he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame.”7 Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious; but to those who are disobedient, “The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone,”8 and“A stone of stumbling
And a rock of offense.”They stumble, being disobedient to the word, to which they also were appointed.
9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; 10 who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy.
11 Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul, 12 having your conduct honorable among the Gentiles, that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may, by your good works which they observe, glorify God in the day of visitation.

1 Peter 2: 1-12       Schlachter 2000
11 Geliebte, ich ermahne euch als Gäste und Fremdlinge: Enthaltet euch der fleischlichen Begierden, die gegen die Seele streiten;
What will you do with Jesus Christ? This rejected stone….. Is He precious to you? Will you submit to Him, embrace Him as Lord and Savior? Or is He a rock of offense….. a crushing stone? If you refuse Him who now speaks from heaven….. You will be ground into powder…. You will lose your life…..
