The Suffering Servant of the LORD
Isaiah 52: 13- 15 Isaiah 53: 1- 12
This morning we celebrate the Triumphal entry of the LORD Jesus into Jerusalem…. It is a time of great celebration…… By this time in the Lord´s earthly ministry the crowds of people following the Lord were huge……. As we study through the Gospel of Luke…. We are now in the last week of Jesus earthly ministry….. It is Sunday the 10th of Nissan……. This is the day that the lambs are chosen for sacrifice at Passover…… Jesus enters Jerusalem and allows Himself to be chosen by the people….. They worship Him and welcome Him as King and Messiah on the very day that Daniel the prophet had predicted more than 500 years before….. As we pick up the gospel of Luke remember this is
Jesus´ last week of
Earthly ministry
1. the times and the seasons
2. the People who were there
3. the prophecies that were fulfilled
4. the responses of worship and faith
1. the times and seasons
It is Passover season It´s Spring time..... The people are rejoicing over Warmer weather and spring flowers.... love is in the air.... The daughters of
Jerusalem are hoping to meet Mr. Wonderful. Every young man is hoping to meet and marry a daughter of Jerusalem..... receiving guests...... news from far away.... news from exotic
places..... the streets are filled with joy and news things to look and and
experience...
2. the people who were there
Adulterers......murderers..... Pharisees....... zealots........ Sinners of every kind.... sinners like us....
Remember.... everyone who came to JESUS..... was healed ....they were and this
is the most important thing..... When they came to Jesus repenting and believing the Good News, they were forgiven of their sins....... And because they were ....
forgiven.....they followed Jesus rejoicing........... rejoicing because of the Grace of God that had flowed into their broken
lives........ Many were sure that Jesus was the Messiah….
As they traveled to Jerusalem……. They were singing the Psalms of
ascent…… Ps113- 118
Blessed is he that comes in the name of the LORD..... Hosanna …..
Hosanna……
Lazarus.... Mary and Martha..... were there….. By now all of Jerusalem
had heard about the death of Lazarus....
JESUS had raised Lazarus from the dead.... from the dead.... only God
can do that.....
Jesus is on his way to Jerusalem to allow himself to be declared Messiah
and King....
Jesus is going to his death.....
And on the way to Jerusalem.....JESUS continues to to teach and proclaim the Good News……. Jesus
continued to teach at every opportunity.....
And Jesus continued to heal everyone who came to him…. the blind
and lepers.... they were under the wrath of God.... at least that´s what the religious leaders
thought... When they repented and cried out for mercy…… Jesus forgave the most
undeserving members of society.... prostitutes.... tax collectors......
Why did he waste his time with them?..... The Pharisees didn´t
understand….. these were hopeless sinners…… They didn´t deserve God´s love and
mercy……
Why does he waste his
time with us?...... We didn´t deserve God´s love and mercy either…..
Why has God himself decided
to forgive and heal..... to show mercy and grace...to the
very people who don´t deserve Mercy.... they.....we ..... are the ones who
receive it.....Why....? Luke 19: 10....
Luke19: 10 NLT
10 For the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost.”
Neues Leben
Jesus is on the way to the Cross....and as he goes... he blesses and heals and forgives....... everyone
who cries out to Him….. Even a notorious sinner like Zacchaeus…..
He was the Chief of the publicans ...... the hated tax collectors...
they were traitors.... allies of Rome.... oppressing their own people because
of their greed....you know the story..... Zacchaeus....right here in the
first part Luke 19....
Zacchaeus....... hated by the people..... despised..... He wants to see
Jesus……. Despite his enormous wealth….. he knows there is more to life…… He
wants to see this Messiah…… he climbs a tree…… and Jesus tells him…… Zacchaeus
come down….. I´m going to your house today…… He will never be the same after he
meets Jesus......
Look at Luke 19: 8….
Luke 19: 8 NKJV
Schlachter 2000
8 Then Zacchaeus
stood and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the poor;
and if I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I restore
fourfold.”
We see him totally transformed……giving away half of his money and restoring 4 times what
he has stolen……
forgiven and filled with thankfulness and joy... that´s the proper
response to mercy and grace.... Jesus is on the way to the Cross....and as he goes... he blesses and heals and forgives..... Lives are
transformed…… But some have refused to repent and believe the Good News of the
Gospel…… Jesus tells a parable about those who say….. We will not have this man
the rule over us…. When he finished this parable he began to go up to
Jerusalem….
Let´s read the story of Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem...Luke 19:
28- 40.....
Luke 19: 28- 40 NKJV
28 When He had
said this, He went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29 And it
came to pass, when He drew near to Bethphage[c] and Bethany,
at the mountain called Olivet, that He sent two of His disciples, 30 saying,
“Go
into the village opposite you, where as you enter you will find a colt
tied, on which no one has ever sat. Loose it and bring it here. 31 And if anyone
asks you, ‘Why are you loosing it?’ thus you shall say to him, ‘Because
the Lord has need of it.’”32 So those who were sent went their way and found it just as He had said to them. 33 But as they were loosing the colt, the owners of it said to them, “Why are you loosing the colt?”
34 And they said, “The Lord has need of him.” 35 Then they brought him to Jesus. And they threw their own clothes on the colt, and they set Jesus on him. 36 And as He went, many spread their clothes on the road.
37 Then, as He was now drawing near the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works they had seen, 38 saying:
“ ‘Blessed is the King who
comes in the name of the Lord!’[d]
Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”
Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”
39 And some of
the Pharisees called to Him from the crowd, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.”
40 But He
answered and said to them, “I tell you that if these should keep silent, the
stones would immediately cry out.”
Luke 19: 28-40 Schlachter
2000
We see Jesus Fulfilling many Prophecies on
this very day.....
3. the Prophecies that were fulfilled............
Daniel 9: 25 ....
Jesus presents himself as King on the very day prophesied by
Daniel…. one of the most amazing
prophesies ever... A lawyer and Expert on terrorism Named Sir Robert Anderson wrote a book about
Daniel´s prophesies…..
THE COMING PRINCE

69 weeks of prophetic years of 360 days (or 69 x 7 x 360) 173, 880 days.
Daniel´s prophesies tell us the exact day of
the appearance of the coming prince….
The Messiah enters Jerusalem on the very day that Daniel prophesied…… The 10 th
of Nissan…….
Jesus fulfilled many more prophesies…..
Hundreds of them and he did it perfectly…. To the letter…We are going to look back in History and find Jesus the King Messiah in the OT this morning…… We´ll be looking in Isaiah…. It was written 700 years before Messiah comes to begin to fulfill it……. Isaiah Prophesied that God would pour out His grace on a wicked and rebellious people….. He Himself would send salvation….
Now, who is going to bring this grace and salvation? Who is going to be the one to provide this deliverance? The answer is the servant of the Lord… That is what He’s often called…. The stone that the builders rejected…… It is the Servant of the LORD….. The Hebrew word is ebed and it means slave or servant…… It’s used hundreds of times in the Old Testament….. It is the Hebrew word for slave as well as servant…… The Servant of Jehovah….. He is the one who will bring salvation…… He is the one who will bring comfort…… He is the one who will bring the forgiveness of sins…… Isaiah often describes the Messiah as the Servant of the Lord….. He writes in Isaiah 52…. verse 13
“Behold My servant…Behold My servant,”
Siehe, mein Knecht
Isaiah 52, 53 is the fourth of the specific prophecies of the servant of the LORD….. in Isaiah
1 Chapter 42, 2 chapter 49, 3 chapter 50 verses 4 to 11 is the third……
Isaiah 52-53….. is the fourth of what we call Isaiah’s servant prophecies…..
This is the most complete….. and most important revelation of the Messiah in the entire Old Testament….. right here in front of us this morning……
When Isaiah wrote this prophecy of hope…….. He was promising grace and salvation to Judah at a dark and difficult time……. They had wicked Manasseh as a king and they were going into captivity…… Their temple would soon be destroyed…. It couldn’t get any worse than that…..
Tradition says that The wicked King Manassah had Isaiah sawn in half….. Hebrews 11……. But shortly before Isaiah is killed….. God steps in and gives Isaiah a dramatic new revelation about the righteous King….. Exactly when All hope was gone…… God in His unfailing love……. Willing to show mercy to a sinful and rebellious people……. Told them that He would send the Messiah….. And explained that He would be a final permanent sacrifice for their sin and rebellion…. God sent Isaiah with GOOD news!
It was truly good news….. astonishing news…… He would not be only a reigning King; he would be a Suffering Servant….. He would not only be a reigning King, he would be a Suffering Servant….. and Isaiah prophesied that the Messiah´s glory would not come until He had suffered……. He said that the Messiah would not suffer for any evil that He had done…… because He would be a righteous king……. They had really never had a righteous King…… Not even David himself….. But finally the Messiah the King would truly be righteous….. He would suffer for the sins of His people taking the punishment that they deserved…..
This is a new revelation…… The righteous King would suffer….. The righteous King would die…… He would not die for His own sins…. He would die for the sins of the people….. He would be a substitute who died in His people’s place……
That reality is pictured in the sacrificial system…. It’s pictured there……. They saw it every day….. But it wasn’t until this prophecy that it was made clear……
Now let’s meet this suffering Servant…... Let me read, starting in Isaiah 52….. verse 13…….
Isaiah 52: 13,15 53: 1- 13 NKJV
13 Behold, My Servant shall deal prudently; He shall be exalted and extolled and be very high.
14 Just as many were astonished at you, So His visage was marred more than any man, And His form more than the sons of men;
15 So shall He sprinkle many nations. Kings shall shut their mouths at Him; For what had not been told them they shall see, Who has believed our report?
1 And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
2 For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, And as a root out of dry ground. He has no form or comeliness;
And when we see Him, There is no beauty that we should desire Him.
3 He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.
4 Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted.
5 But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed.
6 All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.
7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth.
8 He was taken from prison and from judgment, And who will declare His generation? For He was cut off from the land of the living; For the transgressions of My people He was stricken.
9 And they made His grave with the wicked— But with the rich at His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor was any deceit in His mouth.
10 Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief. When You make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, And the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand.
11 He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied.By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many, For He shall bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great, And He shall divide the spoil with the strong, Because He poured out His soul unto death, And He was numbered with the transgressors, And He bore the sin of many,And made intercession for the transgressors.
Isaiah 52: 13- 15, 53: 1-13 Schlachter 2000
Do you see the LORD Jesus Christ there? Here in this text is more than enough proof that God is the author of Scripture….. and Jesus the fulfillment of all that has been written….. right here in this one passage….. Remember it was written 700 years before Jesus was born……. The famous Dead Sea scrolls that are on display for all the world to see…… was written more than 100 years before Jesus was born…… Jesus fulfilled every word…… to the smallest detail in everything he did….
in his life and death….. burial and resurrection….. and in His ascension into heaven to prepare a place for us….. He fulfilled every prophesy ever made about Him….
All through the New Testament Everyone who proclaims the Gospel points back to Isaiah 53…… Jesus quoted it…. the Apostles talked about it…. All of the New Testament writers quoted or paraphrased over and over…..
There are many references to Isaiah 53 all through the NT…
The New Testament writers refer to almost every verse in the fifty-third chapter….. It contains the Good News of the gospel….. and to reject Christ is to reject the clear testimony of history….. The early Church leader…. Augustine said……. It was more than just the writings of a prophet……. He said it is the Gospel made clear before Jesus was born….
But, what does that mean to me? That’s the big question…We could be amazed that these prophecies about a person’s life and death and resurrection could be predicted 700 years before the person was born…… and we should Speechless at such a miracle of God´s Word…. You see….. no mortal man could know that and predict the future like that….. It is clear…. The Scripture is authored by God……
What does it mean to me to us…. To the lost and hopeless world that we live in…. We know that we live in a broken and fallen world….. The brokenness in not just out there…. It´s in here….. The real disaster is that we are sinners…. We received a fallen nature from our father Adam…. We cannot fix ourselves….. It is no wonder that people are lost and feeling hopeless…… What can we do? How can we be restored and whole again….. This book answers this most important question….
How can a sinner be right with God…… How can we escape hell and enter heaven?
That’s the most important question……
How can a holy God declare a sinner righteous?
That’s the question…… We know that God is……. All of creation proclaims His Glory and Majesty…….. Our conscious speaks to us…… It reminds us of our sin and rebellion….. How can we ever make things right with a Holy and righteous God?
The scripture was written to answer this very question…. That is THE question.
The Bible is clear….. We need a substitute a redeemer….
Both Isaiah and Paul give the same answer…...
Sinners….. like me and you…. We needed a substitute…. The Good news of the Word of God is that We can be redeemed because the Servant of Jehovah became a substitute….. Jesus himself suffered the judgment of God in our place…... That’s the message of Romans….. and that’s the message of Isaiah……. The Suffering Servant of the LORD…… suffering for us……. Jesus Is the only hope for anyone…… We cannot save ourselves…… The idea that we can save ourselves…. That we can reform ourselves….. that we can decide to be good……. Is the lie of all of the false religions and cults that have ever existed…. We ´re in the part of Isaiah that prophesies a redeemer…. a substitute….
Here God promises deliverance from sin……… That´s as it should be….. remember…..God the Father is by His very nature a Savior…..
Why does God need to save His people from their sins? The children of Israel in their pride and rebellion….. were not convinced that they needed a Savior…… Some of us here today are not convinced that we need a savior…. The children of Israel thought they just needed a righteous King…... The King Messiah…. They thought that because they were sons of Abraham and because of the Covenants and the promises that God had made…… That they were already perfect in God´s eyes….
They knew they needed a Savior…… but they thought of His purpose as being one of delivering them from the oppression and rule of wicked foreign rulers….. They were confused because of their special place in God´s plan……. They were the chosen people…… They told themselves that that was enough…… Even though their hearts condemned them and reminded them continually of their sin….. They were supposed to be a righteous nation…. A holy nation…. They were instead full of sin and rebellion…
Remember The sacrificial system….? It reminded them every morning and evening that they needed a substitute…….. They sacrificed animals every day…..sprinkling the blood of the sacrifice on the horns of the altar….. But in their hearts they knew it was not enough…… They continued in their guilt…. They also had the testimony of the prophets…… Go back to the first chapter of Isaiah……. Isaiah chapter 1 verse 4….
Isaiah 1: 4 NKJV
4 Alas, sinful nation, people weighed down with iniquity, offspring of evil doers, just like your parents, sons who act corruptly. They have abandoned the Lord, they’ve despised the Holy One of Israel. They’ve turned away from Him.
Isaiah 1: 4 Schlachter 2000
4 Wehe der sündigen Nation, dem schuldbeladenen Volk! Same der Übeltäter, verderbte Kinder!
Isaiah spoke the truth to them….. All of the prophets proclaimed the same message….. Repent…. The Kingdom of Heaven is at hand…. Isaiah goes on in this chapter to show them what was in their hearts….
They needed salvation…… They were a wicked people…… Just like us……. Desperately in need of a substitute….
Look down a few verse……Isaiah 1 verse 18…..
Isaiah 1: 18- 20 NKJV
18 “Come now, and let us reason together,”Says the Lord,“Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson,They shall be as wool.
19 If you are willing and obedient, You shall eat the good of the land;
20 But if you refuse and rebel, You shall be devoured by the sword”; For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.
Isaiah 1: 18- 20 Schlachter 2000
19 Seid ihr willig und gehorsam, so sollt ihr das Gute des Landes essen;
Did they need salvation?
Yes and even Isaiah himself when he saw the Lord …..in Chapter 6 said….. Paraphrased….. I´m going to die….. because I´m a man of unclean lips…… I live in the midst of a people of unclean lips…… But God had a plan….
He had from eternity past a plan to provide a substitute…… His Servant…. the righteous King the Messiah, …….
The Ancient Jews interpreted this prophecy as messianic…..
But they did not see the Messiah making himself an offering for sin…… They didn´t see His substitutionary death in spite of the fact that every day of their history animals were sacrificed…… Every sacrifice pictured substitutionary atonement…….
Jewish liturgy for the Day of Atonement quotes part of this 53rd chapter of Isaiah…..
“Horror has seized upon us. We have none to deliver us….. He has born the yoke of our iniquities and our transgressions, is wounded because of our transgression…… He bears our sin on His shoulder that He may find pardon for our iniquities…… We are healed by His wound at the time the eternal will create Him as a new creation…... O bring Him up from the circle of the earth…… Raise Him up from sear to assemble in the second time on Mount Lebanon by the hand of Yenon.”
Yenon is a Hebrew word for Messiah….. Unfortunately the Jewish scolars looked at the Day of atonement event…. and paraphrased Isaiah 53 and then they reject the clear meaning of it…. Instead of seeing the Messiah´s substitutionary death for sin….. They say it simply means He’ll be symbolically suffering with us…. The Messiah Himself dying for us?
No way…..
That’s why Jesus quotes the Old Testament and speaks of His necessary suffering….. But because they were sure that they were already OK with God….. Remember they had a very elaborate systems of rules and rules about rules….. All they needed to do was be good…… obey the rules…. They thought they could save themselves….. In a works system nobody needs a Savior…… That was the view of ancient Israel….. That is the view of modern Israel……. Israel would never define itself in the terms of Isaiah 1, sick from head to toe…... They don’t need a Savior……
Today the Rabbi´s teach that the children of Israel themselves are the suffering servant of Isaiah 53…. But There is no way to make Israel the object of Isaiah 53…… They were never righteous…. They never suffered unjustly….
This has to be Jesus in these passages….It is clear…..
But Israel at the time of Jesus…. and Israel now has no need for a substitutionary sacrifice……. No need for a Savior to bear their sins…… No need for a Savior to take the wrath of God for them….. They just need a King to rescue them from all the suffering and injustice……
Christianity offers a redeemer and Savior…….
Look at Isaiah 53…. V 11…
Isaiah 53: 10,11 NKJV
10 Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief. When You make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, And the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand.
11 He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied. By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many, For He shall bear their iniquities.
Isaiah 53: 10,11 Schlachter 2000
My Servant, verse 11 of 53, “My Servant will justify the many, He’ll make them right with God—how?—He will bear their iniquities.”
In the final and permanent atonement…. the Servant of the LORD justifies many……. The scripture says He’ll be born in Bethlehem….. Isaiah said He’d be born of a virgin….. When He arrived, we know who He is because at His baptism…… Our Heavenly Father spoke from heaven….
“This is My beloved Son in whom I am well-pleased.”
What was the Father saying there?
He was echoing Isaiah 42:1
“Behold My Servant whom I uphold, My chosen One in whom My soul delights. I have put My Spirit upon Him.”
The Servant of the Lord …. The stone rejected….. is none other than Jesus….. He is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world…… He has become the chief corner stone…as we talked about last week….
CLOSE
So in closing, turn to Hebrews 10…. Here in Hebrews we have a wonderful summary of the pictures in the OT that point to Jesus…. It provides us a clear understanding of the sacrificial system and it´s purpose…… The 10th chapter quotes or paraphrases several OT prophesies about Jesus…. Ps 40…. Isaiah… Micah…. Jeremiah… Let´s look at this wonderful text together…. It´s a great place for you to study in your own quiet times….
Hebrews 10: 1- 18 NLT
10 The old system under the law of Moses was only a shadow, a dim preview of the good things to come, not the good things themselves. The sacrifices under that system were repeated again and again, year after year, but they were never able to provide perfect cleansing for those who came to worship. 2 If they could have provided perfect cleansing, the sacrifices would have stopped, for the worshipers would have been purified once for all time, and their feelings of guilt would have disappeared.
3 But instead, those sacrifices actually reminded them of their sins year after year. 4 For it is not possible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. 5 That is why, when Christ came into the world, he said to God,“You did not want animal sacrifices or sin offerings. But you have given me a body to offer.
6 You were not pleased with burnt offerings or other offerings for sin.
7 Then I said, ‘Look, I have come to do your will, O God— as is written about me in the Scriptures.’”
8 First, Christ said, “You did not want animal sacrifices or sin offerings or burnt offerings or other offerings for sin, nor were you pleased with them” (though they are required by the law of Moses). 9 Then he said, “Look, I have come to do your will.” He cancels the first covenant in order to put the second into effect. 10 For God’s will was for us to be made holy by the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ, once for all time.
11 Under the old covenant, the priest stands and ministers before the altar day after day, offering the same sacrifices again and again, which can never take away sins. 12 But our High Priest offered himself to God as a single sacrifice for sins, good for all time. Then he sat down in the place of honor at God’s right hand. 13 There he waits until his enemies are humbled and made a footstool under his feet. 14 For by that one offering he forever made perfect those who are being made holy.
15 And the Holy Spirit also testifies that this is so. For he says, 16 “This is the new covenant I will make with my people on that day, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds.” 17 Then he says, “I will never again remember their sins and lawless deeds.” 18 And when sins have been forgiven, there is no need to offer any more sacrifices.
Hebrews 10: 1- 18 Neues Leben
Let´s look at verses 16-18 a little closer….
Hebrews 10: 16- 18 NLT Neues Leben
16 “This is the new covenant I will make with my people on that day, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds.” 17 Then he says, “I will never again remember their sins and lawless deeds.” 18 And when sins have been forgiven, there is no need to offer any more sacrifices.
What Good news…… A new heart…
transformed by God Himself……. Through the Ministry of the Suffering Servant of
The LORD….. The LORD JESUS CHRIST…. In a few days he will be crucified for
our sin and rebellion……. For us…. How do we respond to such a sacrifice?....
That brings us to the 4th point in our outline for today…
4. the proper
responses of worship and faith....
Turn to Hebrews 13…
Hebrews 13: 13- 16 NLT
13 So let us go out to him, outside the camp, and bear the disgrace he
bore. 14 For this world is not our permanent home; we are looking forward to a
home yet to come.
15 Therefore, let us offer through Jesus a continual sacrifice of praise
to God, proclaiming our allegiance to his name. 16 And don’t forget to do good
and to share with those in need. These are the sacrifices that please God.
Hebrews 13: 13-
16 Neues Leben
13 Lasst uns deshalb
Gott.
We who know the Lord…. have greater cause to rejoice today…… In the
last 2000 years… Since that first Palm Sunday…
Many have discovered that the peace and freedom and
forgiveness..... they so desperately needed.....
Others refused to
repent and believe the Gospel…… Where are you…. Today is the day…. Let´s pray…
