2014.12.14 Third Advent
Isaiah 9:1-7 and Luke 1
From Darkness to Light Joy
to the World
When I think about this wonderful time of
year, I think of candles, and Advent wreathes..... Light piercing the
darkness of long winter nights and bringing excitement and smiles to our
faces.... Truly a wonderful time....
I think of joy filled music
and songs of worship and praise.... I think of the birth of Jesus..... The long promised Messiah..... I think of all
of the prophesies written in the scriptures..... I think of their wonderful
fulfillment recorded in the Gospels......
I think of the
Glorious light of the Gospel shining
brightly to show us the darkness of sin......…
I think of the prophet Isaiah....He wrote many
prophesies of the Messiah....... Please turn
with me to Isaiah 9....
Isaiah 9: 1-7
1 Nevertheless, that time of darkness and despair will not go on
forever. The land of Zebulun and Naphtali will be humbled, but there will be a
time in the future when Galilee of the Gentiles, which lies along the road that
runs between the Jordan and the sea, will be filled with glory.
2 The people who walk in darkness
will see a great light. For those who live in a land of deep darkness, a light
will shine.
3 You will enlarge the nation of Israel, and its people will rejoice.
They will rejoice before you as people rejoice at the harvest and like warriors
dividing the plunder.
4 For you will break the yoke of their slavery and lift the heavy burden
from their shoulders. You will break the oppressor’s rod, just as you did when
you destroyed the army of Midian.
5 The boots of the warrior and the uniform bloodstained by war will all
be burned. They will be fuel for the fire.
6 For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will
rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince
of Peace.
7 His government and its peace
will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his
ancestor David for all eternity. The passionate commitment of the Lord of
Heaven’s Armies will make this happen!
Isaiah 8:23, 9:
1- 6 Neues Leben
Look at verse 2….
Isaiah 9: 2
NLT Neues Leben
2 The people who walk in darkness
will see a great light. For those who live in a land of deep darkness, a light
will shine.
V1,2…. For those who live in a
land of deep darkness, a light will shine.…… That sounds like today…… When I
read these verses I think of our day….. we also live in a time that is very
dark….. Hopelessness and gloom surrounds us…. People have lost their anchor…..
They have rejected God….. In so doing they have plunged themselves in deepest
darkness and Gloom…… That´s exactly what the Children of Israel did over and
over again….
In Chapter 8 of this text…. Isaiah has just
prophesied Gloom and disaster upon Israel because of their sin and rejection of
the LORD GOD…. As we pick up the scriptures here is ch 9….. We see
God promising the Messiah…. The Savoir and redeemer of the world to
them….
v1…. The people will be humbled….. But Then
the land… even the land of the Gentiles will be filled with Glory…. v2… says a
great light will shine…. Here we see the promise of the Messiah given to
comfort and strengthen them in their hard times….
v3…. You will enlarge the nation of Israel, and its people will rejoice.
They will rejoice before you as people rejoice at the harvest and like warriors
dividing the plunder.…… The ministry of the Messiah will bring great
joy and they will rejoice……
Jesus said His ministry was like having a
wedding celebration…. Matthew 9:14-15….
Look with me for a minute at verse 5....
v5… a child is born.... a son is given....
a child is born.... born of the virgin
Mary.... she was a decendant of David.... but she was not from the Line that
included the heir to the throne.....
a son is given.... this expression means adoption..... The
Messiah had to be adopted by Joseph.... Because Joseph was from the line that
included the heir to the throne..... Jesus´ right to the throne of David came
because he was adopted by Joseph...
Jesus was both born and adopted into the line
of David....
Today
we will take a look at the long expected coming of the Messiah.... the baby born in Bethlehem.... He was born to die..... The Messiah was
prophesied to be born in Bethlehem.... the City of David.... There are more than 450 passages in the Old
Testament that speak of the coming of Jesus.... He is the Lamb of God born of a
virgin.... born in a stable.... the light of the world....
The ancient Rabbis said that the entire Old
testament is only about the Messiah....
They said that the world was created only for
the Messiah....The ancient rabbis said that during the creation of the
earth...... it was the Spirit of King Messiah that moved on the face of the
waters.... Genesis 1:2....
By the way ... that great Rabbi and scholar of the new testament..... The apostle
Paul..... agrees with the ancient rabbis....
In the opening words of His letter to the Hebrews… Paul opens up the
meaning of the OT scriptures with perfect clarity..... He shows us the true
power and purpose of the incarnation..... Turn with me to Hebrews 1....
Hebrews 1: 1-3 NLT
1 Long ago God spoke many times and in many ways to our ancestors
through the prophets. 2 And now in these final days, he has spoken to us through his Son. God promised everything
to the Son as an inheritance, and through the Son he created the universe. 3
The Son radiates God’s own glory and expresses the very character of God, and
he sustains everything by the mighty power of his command. When he had cleansed
us from our sins, he sat down in the place of honor at the right hand of the
majestic God in heaven.
Hebrews 1:
1-3 Neues Leben
Vorfahren gesprochen,
2 doch in
v2b.... He has spoken through His Son…. He has given everything to Him as His Inheritance….. thru the Son....
he created....
v3b.....The Son reflects God´s Glory perfectly and he sustains
everything..... And then……. He
cleansed our sins...... Once for all time….
Paul presents Jesus…. The MESSIAH…. GOD
in the flesh….
The only hope of the people was the
Messiah.... he would set them free from bondage.... he would bring justice and
righteousness.... he would rule on the throne of David forever....
The longing for the coming of the messiah was
always present..... The darker the situation ... the more earnestly they prayed
for the Messiah to come quickly...
It was exactly during the darkest of those
times that Jesus was born.... It had been 400 years of darkness and gloom.....
For 400 years there had been no prophets.... no presence of the Shekinah Glory
of God..... No angelic visitations.... nothing.... nothing but subjection to
foreign governments..... And the humiliation of being unable to free themselves
from the Greeks and then from the Romans….
They longed for deliverance and redemption..... They longed for the
everlasting Kingdom of the Messiah...
But….. When Jesus came
and began His Ministry in Israel…. Not everyone was happy about the
Advent.... The appearance of the Messiah.... Even though Jesus came as savoir
and redeemer…. Some hated him and even wanted to kill him…
The Apostle wrote these words in his Gospel…
John 1:11,12….
John 1: 11-14
NKJV
11 He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. 12 But as many
as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those
who believe in His name:
13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the
will of man, but of God.
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His
glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and
truth.
John 1:
11-14 sch2000
die an seinen Namen glauben;
When the Messiah came to a lost and sinful
world…. A world black with sin….. The Messiah shone as bright as the midday
sun….. Even then…. many rejected Him…..
Today in the 21st century…… The
world is still very dark….. Most are hopeless......
and they are helpless to change the world
or even their own lives…. Because of the
fall……
We were all born in sin.... And therefore we
were without hope.... and then the Glorious Light of the Gospel shown in our
hearts.... and we have been adopted into the family of God... This is Good
News….
Advent is the perfect time of year
to reach out to our friends and neighbors….. Many people
in our lives are still lost in the deep darkness of sin and rebellion…..
Some will hear the Good News of the Advent of the LORD JESUS…. They will repent
and believe..... They will find forgiveness and redemption in Jesus… It
is the source of the Fathers joy……. God himself delights to show mercy…. Micah
chapter 7…. and as believers it can be the source of our joy too!
We are now the light of the
world! We have also been sent! What better time to share the Good News….
Let´s look at the events that surrounded the birth of Jesus…..Turn with me to Luke chapter
1.....
Luke 1: 1-4 NLT
1 Many people have set out to write accounts about the events that have
been fulfilled among us. 2 They used the eyewitness reports circulating among
us from the early disciples. 3 Having carefully investigated everything from
the beginning, I also have decided to write a careful account for you, most
honorable Theophilus, 4 so you can be certain of the truth of everything you
were taught.
Luke 1:
1-4 Neues Leben
1 Verehrter
Look at verse 4…..
v4… you can be certain of the
truth of everything that you read….
We can trust this book.....Ignore the
so called scholars who from unbelief have tried to discredit the Word of
God... They will be proved wrong...every one of them.... As time goes on
Archeology reveals the so called experts to be wrong…… And God´s word standing
true and eternal….
The greatest example are the discoveries at Qumran.... Parts of almost every OT book was found there…….
And a complete Isaiah scroll…. This copy was made at least 150 years before
Jesus was born……. It is filled with prophesies that were fulfilled by
Jesus birth and death and resurrection…..
Recent (as of December, 1994) findings by German papyrus expert Carsten
Thiede show that we may actually
possess copies of Matthew and Mark that date very close to the time of
Jesus....... about 50 or 60 AD........
Thiede’s findings are based on a careful
analysis of the handwriting script used on the fragment..... He compared them
with the same dead sea scrolls.....as well as other ancient documents.......we
have copies of Matthew that were written before the temple was destroyed.... we
have similar evidence for Mark...... We can trust this book.....
Ignore the so called scholars who from unbelief have tried to discredit the
Word of God... They will be proved wrong..... every one of them... turn with me
again to Luke 1…v.5…
Luke 1: 5-7 NLT
5 When Herod was king of Judea, there was a Jewish priest named
Zechariah. He was a member of the priestly order of Abijah, and his wife,
Elizabeth, was also from the priestly line of Aaron. 6 Zechariah and Elizabeth
were righteous in God’s eyes, careful to obey all of the Lord’s commandments
and regulations. 7 They had no children because Elizabeth was unable to conceive,
and they were both very old.
Luke 1:
5-7 Neues Leben
sehr alt.
v5..... It was believed to be a
double blessing to be married to a daughter of AAron...
Of the division of Abijah: Priestly divisions (including the division of
Abijah) are noted in 1 Chronicles 23-24.
v 6.... God Fearers.....
Zacharias and Elizabeth, who were righteous and obedient.......Pharisees
in the best sense....not at all hypocrites.... they were sincere...( without
wax....)nothing to hide...
Sought and prayed for the consolation of Israel...... the coming of the
Messiah.....
Luke 1: 8-10 NLT
8 One day Zechariah was serving God in the Temple, for his order was on
duty that week. 9 As was the custom of the priests, he was chosen by lot to
enter the sanctuary of the Lord and burn incense. 10 While the incense was
being burned, a great crowd stood outside, praying.
Luke 1: 8-10 Neues Leben
Only a few priests could actually serve in the temple each year...... There were only a few jobs that
were done in the temple…. Zacharias was chosen by lot to enter the sanctuary
of the Lord and burn incense. ......
To a godly man like Zacharias, this would be the biggest event of his
life...... a tremendous privilege, a-once-in-a-lifetime opportunity....... This whole event was filled with enormous
anticipation......
He was going to stand before the Lord.... Before the Holy of Holies and
offer up the incense that represented the Prayers of the people…. v11….
Luke 1: 11- 17 NLT
11 While Zechariah was in the sanctuary, an angel of the Lord appeared
to him, standing to the right of the incense altar. 12 Zechariah was shaken and
overwhelmed with fear when he saw him. 13 But the angel said, “Don’t be afraid,
Zechariah! God has heard your prayer. Your wife, Elizabeth, will give you a
son, and you are to name him John.
14 You will have great joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his
birth, 15 for he will be great in the eyes of the Lord. He must never touch
wine or other alcoholic drinks. He will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even
before his birth. 16 And he will turn many Israelites to the Lord their God.
17 He will be a man with the spirit and power of Elijah. He will prepare
the people for the coming of the Lord. He will turn the hearts of the fathers
to their children, and he will cause those who are rebellious to accept the
wisdom of the godly.”
Luke 1: 11-
17 Neues Leben
12 Zacharias
erschrak bis ins Herz,
13 doch der
Engel sagte: »Hab keine Angst, Zacharias! Gott hat dein Gebet erhört. Deine
Can you imagine the scene.... It was an
awesome place to be.... the Holy place.... and now an angel.... He was
afraid....very afraid....
v13 for your prayer is
heard... was he still praying for a child after all of these years...???
The angel said…. call him John....
It means .... the LORD is gracious...
V14 you will have joy and
gladness...
Elizabeth’s barrenness ( childlessness ) turns to great blessing......
Children are a gift from the LORD.... Think about how many times God
supernaturally caused the birth of children...
Abraham and Sarah... Isaac Genesis 17
Elkanah and Hannah...... Samuel 1 Samuel 2
Isaac and Rebekah.......Jacob and Esau Genesis 25….
Application
After decades of sorrow and hard times…. After all of those years of not understanding
the pain and suffering….. An angel comes
to this Godly couple…. They had suffered many years of hard times…
Now Their shame and sorrow is ended…. Finally after all of those
years… v14…They will have joy and gladness…. God had not abandoned them…….
God has not abandoned you…. God uses the difficult times to teach and
correct us…. Sometimes we suffer hard times to build our character…
Hard times teach us Patience…. Paul said got trouble….. rejoice! Really?
Really!
I´ll show you…. Turn with me to romans 5…v3…
Romans 5: 3-5
NLT Neues Leben
3 We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know
that they help us develop endurance. 4 And endurance develops strength of
character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. 5 And
this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us,
because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.
Romans 5:
3-5 NLT Neues Leben
The great King David is also a powerful
example for us…… he knew great difficulties and sorrow….I am reminded in the Psalms
how often he cried out to the Lord…….
Why??? Help??? Deliver me…! He had very had times….
Sometimes the hard times were not his fault…..
Saul sought to kill him….. Just because the Lord had chosen him to be the next
king of Israel…. Turn with me to Psalm 30:..v10….v11 Deutsch…
Psalm 30: 10-12 NKJV
10 Hear me, Lord, and have mercy on me.
Help me, O Lord.”
11 You have turned my mourning into joyful dancing. You have taken away
my clothes of mourning and clothed me with joy,
12 that I might sing praises to you and not be silent. O Lord my God, I
will give you thanks forever!
Psalm 30: 11-13 Neues Leben
11 Herr, höre
mich! Sei mir gnädig und hilf mir!«
12 Du hast
meine Trauer in einen Tanz voller Freude verwandelt. Du hast mir die
Trauergewänder ausgezogen und mir Freude geschenkt,
13 damit ich
dich preise und nicht schweige. Herr, mein Gott, für immer will ich dir danken!
We cry out to God in our hard times…… And
because of the promises in the Word of God…. We know that he will hear
us….. And in His own perfect timing…. He will deliver us….
Sometimes the hard times were caused by David
himself….. His sin with Bathsheba..….. Psalm 51 is a wonderful place for
you own bible study times…. In these verses we see genuine repentance and God´s
grace poured out on his life again…
The same is true of us….. Sometimes we suffer
very difficult times….. We don´t understand what the Lord is doing with our
lives….. We cry out to him and wait for his deliverance….. Zacharias and
Elizabeth waited for decades…. Finally they did see His unfailing love in
action….. A son…. The forerunner of Jesus the Messiah…
Peter tells us this book was given to us by
our great and gracious Heavenly Father…. 1 Peter 1:3- 8….
1 Peter 1:3- 9 NLT Neues Leben
3 All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is by his
great mercy that we have been born again, because God raised Jesus Christ from
the dead. Now we live with great expectation, 4 and we have a priceless
inheritance—an inheritance that is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled,
beyond the reach of change and decay. 5 And through your faith, God is
protecting you by his power until you receive this salvation, which is ready to
be revealed on the last day for all to see.
6 So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you must
endure many trials for a little while. 7 These trials will show that your faith
is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold—though your
faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong
through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the
day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.
8 You love him even though you have never seen him. Though you do not
see him now, you trust him; and you rejoice with a glorious, inexpressible joy.
9 The reward for trusting him will be the salvation of your souls.
1 Peter 1:3- 9 Neues Leben
3 Gelobt sei
V6…. These verses are a sermon within a Sermon…..
If only we were an Amish/ Mennonite congregation…..We could have real sermon…..
2-3 hours of preaching and teaching….. that would be awesome…. Oder?
Paul
agrees…. Turn with me to Romans 15…v4…
Romans 15:4- 6 NKJV sch
2000
4 For whatever things were written before were written for our learning,
that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope. 5
Now may the God of patience and comfort grant you to be like-minded toward one
another, according to Christ Jesus, 6 that you may with one mind and one mouth
glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Romans 15:4-
6 NKJV sch 2000
4 Denn alles,
Here is the summary of these matters….. This
Precious Word of God….. Teaches us patience and comforts us…. So that we can
have hope…… so that we can hang on to Jesus in the hardest of times….
So that like Zacharias and Elizabeth …. We can also be
Filled with joy and gladness……
Are we filled with joy and gladness today….?
It´s God´s plan that even in sorrows and hard times that we trust Him
and patiently wait for His help…..
We were lost and without hope before we became Christians.... we were walking in deepest
darkness..... and then the Marvelous Light of the Gospel burst into our
hearts....
Now we have a mission.... we have been saved for a purpose.... we have
been sent.... This Advent season is the perfect time to share the Good News of
the gospel with friends and family and neighbors….. Mc Doner…… Daughter… son….
Ali….
We need to joyfully reflect the transformation
that God has made in our lives.... remembering Zacharias and the blessing of
intercessory prayer.... we can pray for each other like Paul did....
Colossians 1: 9 – 14
NLT
9 So we have not stopped praying
for you since we first heard about you. We ask God to give you complete
knowledge of his will and to give you spiritual wisdom and understanding. 10
Then the way you live will always honor and please the Lord, and your lives
will produce every kind of good fruit. All the while, you will grow as you
learn to know God better and better.
11 We also pray that you will be strengthened with all his glorious
power so you will have all the endurance and patience you need. May you be
filled with joy, 12 always thanking the Father. He has enabled you to share in
the inheritance that belongs to his people, who live in the light. 13 For he
has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom
of his dear Son, 14 who purchased our freedom and forgave our sins.
Colossians 1:
9 – 14 Neues Leben
9 Deshalb
vergeben.
