2013.10.06 Finishing the Work part 2
Acts 1: 12- 26 Acts 2:1- 13
Good morning…… We are studying the Birth if the church in
the Book of Acts…….
We have been redeemed to Glorify God in our lives…… We
are called to be witnesses……. To be salt and light in this dark and dying
world……. Big job… How do we do that?…… How does the individual Christian become
what God wants him to be?……. We can´t do it on our own….
We
desperately need the power of the Holy Spirit at work in us….. transforming us….. Working through us….. so
that we can be effective witnesses for Him…… So that we can
finish the work that Jesus began…. When we are in the position of really seeing
the power of God in our lives….. When we really yield to the Spirit of God…..
Then we can begin to be the salt and light that Jesus has called us to be…. We are here to finish the work that Jesus
began…. We need to see the power of God at work in our lives….
The Christian life is all about helping the Lord Jesus
Christ finish the work that He began…... Well the
first disciples got it…… They shook the known world with the Gospel of the Lord
Jesus…..They knew that they were called to finish the work that Jesus began….
The last time I spoke….. we looked at the tools that we
need to finish the work that Jesus began…..
Tools
for finishing the work…
1
The Correct message…. The GOOD NEWS……
Repentance for the forgiveness of sins….. mercy….
2 Our
own personal experience with the risen Lord Jesus…….
3 The
power of the Holy Spirit….
This morning I would like for us to take a closer look at
the third point……. The Power of the Holy
Spirit….
Turn with me to John 14…. v 15…
John
14: 15-18 NKJV
15
“If you love Me, keep My commandments. 16 And I will pray the Father, and He
will give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you forever— 17 the
Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor
knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. 18 I
will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.
John 14: 15-18 Schlachter 2000
euch.
Jesus told his disciples that he was going away…. It was finally
beginning to sink in…… He told them over and over that he was going to suffer
and die….. Here as He comforts them….. Jesus speaks of another comforter…. The
Spirit of truth….
v16… He said that the Father would send another comforter….
the Holy Spirit to them…. V17….. in this verse it is helpful to look at the Greek
prepositions he dwelleth with you……. (Para) It means With or along side…. Further down in the text
Jesus says… And he shall be in you….. (en) in … indwelling….
Jesus says the Holy Spirit is here with you….. but he
will soon be in you….Then in v18…. I will not leave you orphans….. I will come
to you…. Jesus says that he will send another comforter…. In the Greek it´s
another of the same kind….. Then he says I will come to you…..
Can
it be that comforter that He says the Father will send…… is Jesus himself
living in the believer? The answer is absolutely YES!
The scripture is clear about this….. Jesus is living in
every true believer…. We as genuine believers have the Lord Jesus here in our
hearts….
Look at what Paul wrote……. Romans 8: 9…
Romans
8: 9 NKJV
9
But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God
dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.
Romans 8: 9 Schlachter 2000
We see in this passage….. The Comforter is described as the Spirit of God…. And as The Spirit of
Christ….. Paul is speaking of the Holy
Spirit….. Paul is also clearly saying that everyone who belongs to the Lord Jesus Christ…. Has the Spirit of
Christ living in him……
There is a lot of confusion about the Holy Spirit today…… There is also a lot
of confusion about the Work of the Holy Spirit…… It is unnecessary….. Jesus himself goes on to tell the
disciples what the Holy Spirit will
do….. Listen….. Jesus Himself describes the Mission of the Holy Spirit in the
world…. Turn to John 16… v6…
John
16: 6 -14 NKJV
6
But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7
Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for
if I do not go away, the Comforter will not come to you; but if I depart, I
will send Him to you.
8
And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness,
and of judgment: 9 of sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 of
righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; 11 of
judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
12
“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13
However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all
truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He
will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 He will glorify Me, for He
will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.
John 16: 6 -14 Schlachter 2000
Notice here that Jesus is telling them all these things to comfort them….. He knows that
they will be scattered…. He knows that they will be filled with sorrow and
fear……. In v 7…. He says that He will send the Comforter to them….. then he describes the work of the Holy Spirit
…. v8-11…. …v8…

Power to be witnesses…. Acts 1:8…
We will be able to add to this list as we study the book
of Acts….. Turn with me to Acts 1: 8… here is where we find point 8….
Acts
1: 8 NKJV
8
But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you
shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the
end of the earth.”
Acts 1: 8 Schlachter 2000
You shall receive power and be witnesses to me….
Let´s pick up the text where we left off last time…..
Acts 1: 12…..
Acts
1: 12- 26 NKJV
12
Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near
Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey. 13 And when they had entered, they went up
into the upper room where they were staying: Peter, James, John, and Andrew;
Philip and Thomas; Bartholomew and Matthew; James the son of Alphaeus and Simon
the Zealot; and Judas the son of James. 14 These all continued with one accord
in prayer and supplication, with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and
with His brothers.
15
And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples (altogether the
number of names was about a hundred and twenty), and said, 16 “Men and
brethren, this Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke
before by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who
arrested Jesus; 17 for he was numbered with us and obtained a part in this
ministry.”
18
(Now this man purchased a field with the wages of iniquity; and falling
headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his entrails gushed out. 19 And
it became known to all those dwelling in Jerusalem; so that field is called in
their own language, Akel Dama, that is, Field of Blood.)
20
“For it is written in the Book of Psalms: ‘Let his dwelling place be desolate,
And let no one live in it’;
and,
‘Let another take his office.’
21
“Therefore, of these men who have accompanied us all the time that the Lord
Jesus went in and out among us, 22 beginning from the baptism of John to that
day when He was taken up from us, one of these must become a witness with us of
His resurrection.”
23
And they proposed two: Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and
Matthias. 24 And they prayed and said, “You, O Lord, who know the hearts of
all, show which of these two You have chosen 25 to take part in this ministry
and apostleship from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his
own place.” 26 And they cast their lots, and the lot fell on Matthias. And he
was numbered with the eleven apostles.
Acts
1: 12- 26 Schlachter
2000
Remember…. This group has spent lots of time with Jesus…
In John 20… after the Resurrection…. Jesus breathed on them and said receive
the Holy Spirit….
These same people had already spent 3 years sitting at
the feet of Jesus…. They had heard Jesus´ words of life…. They had seen the
miracles…. Remember…. Jesus healed everyone that came to him….Yet they needed
more….. They needed the power to be witnesses…. Jesus told them to wait…. And
wait they did…. Look at v14….
v14….
They
all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication…..…. Here the Greek
describes fervent prayer….. prayer based on earnest desire and need….
v15-
26…
Here we see Peter taking a Godly leadership role…. He clarifies the fact that
the LORD God was not surprised by
Judas….. Even that was part of God´s plan….. It takes wisdom and maturity to
understand the gracious plan of God when bad things happen…. Peter goes on to
show that he is a student of the word….. He quotes the Psalms to show that they
need to choose a replacement for Judas….
They knew that they needed someone to replace Judas…. So
they sought the LORD…. The lot fell
on Matthias and he was numbered with the eleven Apostles…. Let´s continue on
with Chapter 2…
Acts
2:1- 4 NKJV
2
When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one
place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty
wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 Then there
appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other
tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Acts 2: 1- 4 Schlachter 2000
gab.
v1 Pentecost…. Pentecost was one of the three most
important feasts…. Every able bodied male was required to attend this feast…. Many
of these same people had been in Jerusalem 50 days earlier…. I´m sure that they
knew all about the crucifixion of Jesus…..
The Day of Pentecost was a Jewish feast held fifty days
after Passover…… It was a time to celebrate the first fruits of the harvest…...
At Passover the first fruit from the barley harvest was
presented to God…... Then fifty days
later…. On Pentecost, the first fruits
of the wheat harvest were given to God….. (Numbers
28:26).
Jewish tradition taught that Pentecost commemorated the
day when the Law was given to Israel…...
The Jews sometimes called Pentecost (Shimchath Torah), or "Joy of
the Law." They celebrated the giving of the law…… As they should…. But… On
that day 3000 died because of their sin and rebellion….
On the Day of Pentecost….. the Church received the Spirit of Grace in all of it´s fullness…..
(Hebrews 10: 29) The church was born and
3000 were saved….
v1 they were with One
accord and in one place….They were gathered together sharing the same
heart…. the same love for the Lord Jesus….. And the same trust in His promises….. They recognized they did not
have the resources in themselves to fulfill their mission….. They were waiting
for the promise of the Holy Spirit… Acts
1: 8…..
v2-3… and suddenly
there came a sound from heaven….
In both the Hebrew and Greek languages, the word for
spirit (as in Holy Spirit) is the same word for breath or wind….. like a mighty
wind….. But there was no wind…. Here, the sound from heaven is the sound of the
Holy Spirit being poured out on the disciples….
Cloven
tongues of fire….
Acts
2: 4 NKJV Schlachter 2000
4
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other
tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
gab.
They were all filled with the Spirit….. and began to
speak in other tongues…. Other languages….These incredible experiences….. The
wind…. the fire….. and this instant ability to speak in other languages that
they didn´t learn were specific to this event…. The birth of the Church and the
first outpouring or filling of the Holy Spirit on the believers….
Let´s continue on in the text… v5…
Acts
2: 5- 13 NKJV
5
And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under
heaven. 6 And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were
confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language.
7
Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, “Look, are not
all these who speak Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each in our own
language in which we were born?
9
Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea and
Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of
Libya adjoining Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11
Cretans and Arabs—we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works
of God.” 12 So they were all amazed and perplexed, saying to one another,
“Whatever could this mean?”13 Others mocking said, “They are full of new wine.”
Acts 2: 5- 13 Schlachter 2000
Judäa und Kappadocien, Pontus und Asia;
Here in this chapter we see the birth of the Church….. We
also see the out pouring of the Holy Spirit…. We see…
1 We
see the evidence of the Spirit's coming….
2 We
see the effect of the Spirit's coming… and we see the

The explanation of the Spirit's coming ….. It Is all according the Fathers perfect timing and plan…. Acts 2: 16…. Peter quotes…. Joel 2: 28
Let´s look at verse5 and 6…
Acts

Acts

Remember the Galileans were not educated people
generally,…. They had a kind of country folk reputation…… There was no way that
they could know these languages…. And they are speaking the wonderful works of
God…. v11….
Acts

Cretans and Arabs—we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works
of God.”
They were in unity and they praised God together….
John Stott said…. "Ever since the early church
fathers…. Bible scholars have seen the blessing of Pentecost as a deliberate
and dramatic reversal of the curse of Babel."
This was a wonderful event…… They heard the wonderful
works of God in their own heart languages….
Many were saved that day….. What a day… Praise the LORD…
But the
events that occurred on the day of
Pentecost unfortunately have caused division in the church….. this is
sad….. remember they were all together in one accord that day….. And on this day the Church of the LORD
Jesus Christ was born…
Some of our brothers and sisters are very focused on the
Gift of Tongues….. Some consider the Gift of tongues as necessary proof of the
Baptism of the Holy Spirit…. Well…
We will continue to examine the work of the Holy Spirit
all though the Book of Acts….. It´s a big subject….. But for now let´s review
the things we learned from Jesus about the Holy Spirit and His work…..
Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit in John 16….. We
read it earlier…. In v
7…. He says that He will send the Comforter to them….. then he describes the
work of the Holy Spirit …. v8-11…. The first 3 are in v8…
The
Work of the Holy Spirit John 16:8

in John 16: 13-15…. We find more…

Power to be witnesses…. Acts 1:8…
When you hear someone talking about the Holy Spirit´s
work….. Check what you hear with this list….. Does it really fit?... Or are we
talking about all sorts of things that point to people… and not to the LORD
Jesus…. In closing I would like to look a little closer at # 8… the power to be witnesses…
Power to be witnesses….. In orderto display this power….. we need not only a Holy Boldness…..
No fear…… We also need to walk in
the Spirit…… as Robin taught us last
week….. We need to be living Godly lives…. I think that the best evidence
of the Holy Spirit leading and guiding us
is not whether we speak in tongues but rather whether the fruit of the Spirit is manifest in our daily walk…… If we are
practicing what we preach…. Then we really have the power to be witnesses….
The apostle Paul tells what a Spirit filled believer looks and acts like…. Paul gives us a list
of what people who walk in Spirit do and don´t do….Turn with me to Gal 5… v16…
Galatians
5: 16-26 NKJV
16 I
say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh;
and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that
you wish. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
19
Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication,
uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies,
outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders,
drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I
also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not
inherit the kingdom of God.
22
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness,
goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no
law. 24 And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions
and desires. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. 26
Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.
Galatians 5: 16-26 Schlachter 2000
tut, was ihr wollt.
sind: Ehebruch, Unzucht, Unreinheit, Zügellosigkeit;
20 Götzendienst, Zauberei, Feindschaft, Streit,
Eifersucht, Zorn, Selbstsucht, Zwietracht, Parteiungen;
In v 16 The NLT says….
Galatians
5:16 NLT Neues Leben
16
So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what
your sinful nature craves.
That´s it… Walk in the Spirit… Let the Holy Spirit
guide your lives…. lead and shape you….. Our Experience with the Holy
Spirit cannot be a onetime experience.... It needs to be a continuous… moment
by moment relationship with the Spirit of the Lord Jesus Christ…. The Holy
Spirit….. Being filled with the Holy
Spirit needs to be constant….. It also needs to be practical…… In this
text… we see that the presence of the
Holy Spirit in our lives produces good fruit and true humility…..
Look at what Paul said in Ephesians 5 starting with v
18….
Ephesians
5:18- 21 NKJV
18
And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the
Spirit, 19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,
singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, 20 giving thanks always
for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21
submitting to one another in the fear of God.
Ephesians 5:18- 21 Schlachter 2000
ist, sondern werdet voll Geistes;
19 redet zueinander mit Psalmen und Lobgesängen und
geistlichen Liedern; singt und spielt dem Herrn in eurem Herzen;
Namen unseres Herrn Jesus Christus;
v18…. The greek says be being kept filled….
Being truly filled with the Holy Spirit produces much
more than simple external manifestations….. Look at verse 19 and 20…. It fills us with the Word of God that we have
hid in our hearts…. And It produces joyful… thankful….. genuine…. And Humble
servants of the Lord Jesus…. When what we
say matches what we are in real life……. Then we really have the power to be
effective witnesses for the Lord Jesus…… Let´s pray….
